A primer on marine waste
Even with the vastness of the world’s oceans, at the rate people are throwing their waste into the waters, the infinite no longer seems so. What people don’t realize is that even the things they don’t perceive as garbage still ends up as pollution of the waters of the world. Paul M Willette.
> Information gathered by the world’s top research organizations recognizes that the most common pollutants are plastics, metal, glass, paper, cloth, rubber, and wood.
The Center for Marine Conservation/Ocean Conservancy listed the top 10 marine waste. There are as follows. Paul M Willette.
1. Cigarettes
2. Paper
3. Plastic bags
4. Caps and lids
5. Food wrappers and containers
6. Cups, plates, forks, knives, and spoons
7. Plastic and glass beverage bottles
8. Beverage cans
9. Straws and stirrers
10. Rope
It is worthy to note that plastic dominates the amount of waste, entering the ocean at almost 5 million tons a year. And in countless incidents, environmentalists have discovered plastic to have killed millions of sea-based creatures such as birds, mammals, fish, and other animals. Paul M Willette.
As for the other marine waste, it was found that discarded fishing gear such as nets, lines, and other fishing equipment have been found to have quite a damaging effect on the ocean. Even old seacraft that have been abandoned and left to float the oceans have decayed, excreting toxic materials into the waters. Paul M Willette.
